Keeping Heritage Afloat

We have no ship to lose. Many of the world’s historic sailing ships are protected, listed vessels — cared for by foundations and volunteers who give their time freely, often with passion far greater than their budgets. Keeping these ships safe and sailing matters to us as much as it does to them.

The challenge for foundations

Heritage and listed vessels carry irreplaceable craftsmanship and history. But maintaining a rig to a safe standard takes specialist knowledge, materials and money that volunteer-run foundations don’t always have. A rig that is not properly maintained is a risk to the ship, her crew and her future.

How we help

Becher-Larsen works alongside foundations and sail-training organisations in three ways:

• Rigging work — standing and running rigging, restoration and repairs, traditional or modern, to a professional standard. See our services.
• Consultancy & rig surveys — independent advice, rig inspections and planning, so a foundation knows exactly what its ship needs and can prioritise safely within its budget.
• Training — we can train volunteers and crew in rigging skills, so foundations build their own capability and keep knowledge on board.

Whatever keeps her sailing

Sometimes the right answer is to do the work for a foundation; sometimes it is to teach the crew to do it themselves. We are happy to do either — the goal is the same: keep the ship afloat and sailing for the next generation.
