Inspecting rigging on deck

How often?

As a general guideline, standing rigging should be inspected regularly and considered for replacement every 15–20 years on traditional vessels, depending on use. For modern rigging, a typical lifespan is 7–15 years — but condition always matters more than age.

Regular inspections are the simplest way to avoid costly failures at sea. A thorough inspection onse a year goes a long way. In many cases, a complete replacement can be avoided simply by knowing what to monitor throughout the season.

The goal is straightforward: keep your boat or ship sailing and enjoyable, rather than stuck alongside with a broken rig.
